Gee Mark,

"The very worst of America"?  Give me a break!  Tell me, where overseas did
you work where mistakes don't matter?  It's responses like yours that keep
me lurking and not talking, but since you directed this directly to me, I
shall respond:

When 200 + resumes are entered for a single position typographical errors
are a good place to begin a weeding process.  I don't think it's a shallow
practice.  If someone is putting their best foot forward with the
presentation of their cover letter and resume and it contains errors, it
makes me wonder what kind of work they would produce on behalf of the
institution.

The original poster asked for an HR prospective.  That's what I gave.
