I think Alessandra and I had the same boss at one point in our lives!!! What
I learned from the experience are precisely the things NOT to do as a manager
and I try very hard to operate on the other end of the spectrum.

1. Do not micromanage--it's the most demoralizing thing to do to a
subordinate (and it's a waste of your time also!).
2. Different staff need different styles of management/supervision. Learn
what your staff needs and try to adapt. Your challenge is to find what works
best to maximize the effectiveness of your employees.
3. Training, training, training. It is essential to provide good training and
good directions to the staff and then let them run with the project. Keep
track of their progress--set deadlines, review meetings, etc. to make sure
all progresses smoothly, but don't overdo and fall into micromanaging. I've
never been disappointed of how much is accomplished by my staff when they are
empowered to do their jobs.
4. Figure out which things you need to do as a manager and which to delegate.
5. Always, always commend staff for their good work
6. When your staff screws up (it happens), take responsibility for the error
and figure out how to correct it. Do not, ever, blame your subordinates in
front of your own supervisor for a project that went awry. Discuss privately
w/ the staff person to figure out what went wrong and how to fix it.
7. Train yourself to be a manager--read, attend workshops...
8. And (what I learned from my experience with my own former boss from H),
don't yell, rant, rave, belittle, curse, patronize, embarrass, ignore or
otherwise show a complete lack of respect for the human beings with whom you
work.
