Here are a few books you might want to check out.  A Handbook of Native
American Herbs by Alma R. Hutchens, Medical Plants of the Heartland by
Connie Kaye & Neil Billingotn, Edible and Useful Wild Plants of the United
States and Canada by Charles Francis Saunders, and How Indians Use Wild
Plants for Food, Medicine, and Crafts by Frances Densmore.

These should get you started.  Good luck.
