There are many references to plant use (ethnobotany) by Native groups.  The
journal "Ethnobiology" is a good one to check.  The absoulte best
Ethnobotany for a native group I know of is: Seri Ethnobotany: People of the
Desert and Sea" by Richard S. Felger and Mary Beck Moser (1985) University
of Arizona Press.  It is an area somewhat removed geographically from the
midwest, but is worth a look.  Some other names to look for in the midwest
are Gilmore and Asch.
