According to the article in last Sunday's Washington Post Magazine (if you
haven't gone on-line and read it yet, READ IT. Sure did get my steam up).
Behring, through a prior relationship with Michael Heyman, donated money to
NMNH for a mammal hall to house all the endangered species he's killed (ok,
that last was an editorial addition). However, the staff didn't produce fast
enough and he complained. To calm him down, Small offered the NMAH deal,
which comes with strings attached as to deadlines. Behring then brought the
Reynolds in because his $80mil was not enough to get everything done.

I think the next step is renaming the Smithsonian.... don't we miss the days
when things like the Garber facility and the Ripley Center were named after
staff :)
