Just to keep my sanity, I must remind those interviewing for positions to be
cautious about the answers given when you ask why the person who formerly
held the position left.

Without divulging too much, I left a position several years ago due to an
"air quality control problem" in a particular institution (we were breathing
toxic fumes on a daily basis due to carpet problems). I was sick most of
the time, and ended up taking a part-time job to get out of the environment.
The person who was finally hired to take my place was told I "got a great
job in my hometown and decided to take it". Within four months, she was
diagnosed with chronic asthma and will suffer permanant damage. Although
there are legal repercussions to her case - she will never be the same
again.
She was lied to by the person who interviewed her, lied to by the rest of
the staff in a concerted effort to fill the position (and under orders from
the higher ups...), and only when she was entrenched in the job did they
fully disclose the nature of the problems.

I know this is an extreme example, but I also think it underscores the
biggest thing I've learned about job interviewing - buyer beware! I now
view an interview as my chance to decide whether or not to take a job, as
opposed to selling myself to a potential employer. if I don't get an
offer - so be it, but I've decided I will no longer be so eager to take
ANYTHING that comes my way. It may sound like its easy for me to say to
those of you in the midst of searching, but i do believe there are ways to
sell yourself and find out if you even want that job at the same time.

Good luck to all!
