In the San Francisco Chronicle newspaper this week was an article that
many of the Montgomery Wards buildings are being taken over by the
department store chain, Target.  Might be worth it for  your students to
also investigate that?

Also, in Oakland, there was quite a battle amongst local
preservationists and the city over the destruction of the Montgomery
Wards building in east Oakland near the Fruitvale BART station.  I think
they lost- the building is in far too disrepair for it to be renovated
let alone restored.
