"Public Programming", March 26-31
offered through the Cultural Resource Management Program, University of
Victoria

DESCRIPTION
Transforming mission, collections, and research into engaging, inclusive
public programs that respect, reflect and attract communities is a
challenging task for museum educators. This course draws on current
educational research and encourages you to consider creative programming
strategies as you develop your ability to:

 + define the role of public programming and set goals and priorities
 + involve community
 + engage visitors of varied age, background and interests, including
families, students, adults      and groups with special needs
 + develop innovative programming within the museum, on the road and on the
Web
 + respond to visitors' learning preferences and characteristics
 + consider the roles of narrative, meaning making and constructivism
 + facilitate team approaches to program development and delivery
 + plan strategically and manage, market, implement, and evaluate programs

Instructor: Kathleen Kuba is the Director of Education and Community
Programs at the Missouri History Museum. She has worked in education,
interpretation and exhibits with organizations such as the Museum of History
and Industry in Seattle, King County Park System, Denver Museum of Natural
History, and the Burke Museum. Ms. Kuba serves on the Board of Directors
with the Museum Education Roundtable, and has served on the board of the
Washington State Museum Association and the American Association of Museum's
Education Committee.

Dates: March 26-31, 2001

Please register by: February 28 (late registrations accepted if space
permits)

Fee: $589 (Canadian funds, credit or non credit)

Travel: Victoria is easily accessible from Seattle and Vancouver

Accommodation: Program staff are pleased to provide information on local
B&B, hotel, and on-campus options  -- some options as low as $25 CAD/night!

DRAFT OUTLINE SUMMARY
MONDAY, March 26: Basic Tools for the Job
- Introductions; discussion of objectives and overview of the course
- The changing role of museum education and public programs
- Which programs: defining factors of collections, exhibits, place,
community
- Who is the audience: further definitions
- Informal get-together

TUESDAY, March 27: Expanding the Tool Kit
- Introduction to observational techniques for field experience
- Field experience at a local "non-museum" site observing behavior of varied
subjects: school groups, tourists, local residents
- Debrief from field experience; group discussion
- Educational role of museums; changing role of the museum educator
- What we know about learning in museums: a general review

WEDNESDAY, March 28: Who We Work With: In the Museum and In the Community
- Role of the community in the museum; role of the museum in the community
- Creating partnerships to strengthen community involvement
- Team work within the museum: prime example of exhibit development
- Team work on programs: staff, volunteers, the community

THURSDAY, March 29: Using our Tools in Planning
- Fundamentals of planning programs: balancing resources, limits, and
strengths with goals of excellence
- Focusing on the intersection of mission, resources, audience, and learning
theory
- Field trip and panel discussion: Janet Macdonald and Gordon Green, Program
Producers, Royal British Columbia Museum
- Field experience Assignment: Critique of a program

FRIDAY, March 30: Improvement - Keeping our Tool Kit Up to Date
- Assessing success, identifying how to improve our practice: evaluation in
museums, a general survey
- Group Project: Create a program plan based on prescribed mission,
facility, audiences, resources, and budget. Develop into an outline plan at
least three of the programs in the plan.

SATURDAY, March 31 Putting it All to Work
- Group Presentations
- Summary and Wrap-up
