Hi, Felicia

I know of a number of institutions which share the ownership of objects:
for instance, the Des Moines Art Center shares possession of Grant Wood's
"The birthplace of Herbert Hoover" with the Minneapolis Institute of Art.

I know that I have seen labels in permanent collection areas that say, "on
loan from..."

It's a good question and I look forward to answers. I think, in fact, that
the problem is complex. Too many large and well-endowed museums own
objects, many of them quite worthy, that will never see the light of day
either in exhibition or in research. Too many other museums are founded for
emotional or egotistical reasons. These organizations often lack funding,
clear missions, long-range plans, and clearly documented collections. An
example of such a situation exists in Havre de Grace Maryland, where there
is a maritime museum that has had a building for a couple of years but no
staff, collections policy or internal structure, and maintains a loose
alliance with the Decoy Museum, Susquehanna/Lockhouse Museum, the Martha
Lewis Skipjack, and a historic building, the Concord Point lighthouse. The
maritime museum is a particularly interesting case study, I think. If you
are interested in contacting them, get in touch with me off-list.
