First of all, budget in money for a costume conservator.  Well-meaning
intentions can destroy artifacts forever, as I'm sure you have already
discovered.  Check the storage for any signs of mold or insect infestation.
Don't repair anything, don't attempt to clean anything until you have
consulted with someone with more training.  Chris Paulocik at the
Metropolitan Museum of Art's Costume Institute is an excellent source for
