We had a former curator put on a "White Elephant Sale" of items that did not fall within the museum's mission statement. We published in local papers for 90 days that loan items could be picked up or the individuals could donate the items to the museum. We also wrote letters to the individuals. If they did not by the end of that period, the items became the property of the museum.

Let me put it this way...that was almost eleven years ago and we are still trying to win the trust of our community. It was the fiasco that 'be not named.'

Subject: [MUSEUM-L] Selling Old Museum Exhibit Signage

Hi all,

I have a lot of old exhibit signage that is taking up valuable storage space in my museum. One of my co-works got the idea that we could sell some of it at an upcoming event. I like that idea as it will not only clear out some of the signage but also generate some revenue. My question is, if the signage has images we don't own the rights but got permission to use in a past exhibit, can we sell that signage? Or do we risk running afoul of copyright law? My gut feeling is to not risk it an only sell signage were we know we have rights to the images but I wanted some outside opinions.
