The Conservation Center for Art & Historic Artifacts (CCAHA) (http://www.ccaha.org) is pleased to be leading the Regional Heritage Stewardship Program (RHSP), serving two areas of the country: Appalachian regions of Kentucky, Ohio, and West Virginia; and the Eastern Gulf Coast regions of Alabama, Mississippi, and the Florida panhandle. With a goal of creating working communities of practice among small organizations facing related challenges, RHSP offers a unique opportunity to increase collections care in individual institutions, as well as to meet and network with other collections care professionals in the region.

Introduction to Digitization

Tuesday, November 28, 2017, 2:00pm EST - Eastern Gulf Coast

Wednesday, November 29, 2017, 2:00pm EST - Appalachia

Digitization can be the final step in processing collections, facilitating access, and even aiding in collections' long-term preservation. Like other collections care endeavors, digitization should not be undertaken without an understanding of best practices, safe techniques, and the knowledge to make the right decisions.

In this webinar, Tamara Talansky will provide a basic overview of some of the considerations institutions should make when digitizing materials, including prioritization and selection criteria, handling practices while scanning or photographing, and storage concerns for digital media.

Pests such as insects, rodents, and birds might be small, but they can cause big problems for collections. In this webinar, Cherry Johnson will provide an introduction to Integrated Pest Management (IPM) for cultural institutions. Topics include common insects found in the Deep South and Appalachian regions of the US, the basic principles of prevention, monitoring, identification, and response/recovery, as well as resources for setting up a pest management program.
