I am posting the text below (in both English and Spanish) at the request of
colleagues in Colombia, who are calling for a one-day closure of museums on
13 May in response to governmental reaction to public protests throughout
the country. Please note that both versions are posted as received from
Colombian colleagues.

*Call for solidarity to the Museums of the World *

Dear directors, workers, and professionals of museums of the world:

Since last April 28 in Colombia, we Colombian people have carried out
various actions of social protest to which the current government, led by
Iván Duque Márquez, has responded with repression and a fatal upsurge of
violence. In the latest report presented by the Colombian NGOs Temblores
and Indepaz, as of May 9th, there are a total of 47 people murdered and
1,876 cases of violence against the population, which include arbitrary
detentions, ocular attacks, forced disappearances, irregular raids, and
sexual violence against women and girls in different parts of the country.
Every day our fellow citizens have become victims of the violent and
murderous actions of the State.

Today afternoon, ACIN's Network for Life and Human Rights Defense reported
that the Public Force and some armed civilians tried to massacre the
Indigenous Minga in Jamundí, Valle del Cauca. That Indigenous Minga was
led by the Indigenous Guard of the Indigenous Regional Council of Cauca
-CRIC- in support of the National Strike. Also, the Human Rights Bulletin
reports that because of this attack 9 people were injured by the impact of
firearms, and they were also revictimized by the time they received medical
attention at the Health Centers. Unfortunately, the government has ordered
the militarization of the city of Cali, thereby increasing the social
tension that currently exists throughout the country.

Colleagues, we need you now more than ever!

In solidarity, we ask you to join in a global protest action from your
institutions. We propose to carry out a one-day “museums strike”, in such a
way that, in addition to making visible the serious political situation in
Colombia and particularly the abuse of the Public Force against social and
political mobilization on the streets of our cities -especially in Cali-,
we can also urge governments of the world to present a diplomatic protest
to the Colombian presidency and other multilateral international bodies. *We
propose to "stop" next Thursday, May 13, as a sign of rejection of violence
and, in addition, call the attention of the international community about
the extreme vulnerability of the Rule of Law that we are facing. *

Currently, we are producing the graphic identity that will unify our
campaign, and as soon as we have it ready, we will send it to you. On that
day, on the other hand, we will be thankful for you to generate spaces for
dialogue with Colombian compatriots throughout the world.

―From various cities and museums in Colombia, the night of May 9, 2021.
