I might recommending contacting either the Dakota Territorial Museum in Yankton, SD or the Collections Department of Siouxland Heritage Museums in Sioux Falls, SD. Both completely moved their collections to different buildings within the last year and could probably give you advice.

Thanks,

Subject: [MUSEUM-L] Library move and renovation

Good afternoon!

I would love to hear from anyone who has ever done a Library move/renovation. We are in the preliminary planning stages and would love any feedback and insight from your own experiences. We are also looking for resources where we might be able to rent mobile book trucks for a period of time to move books from point A to point B.

Our library consists of about 11k items, including books, magazines, yearbooks, scrapbooks, pamphlets, manuals, hardcover books fiction/non-fiction. The oldest and most fragile books of our collection are actually boxed individually. While renovation is taking place, the items will be stored/staged in a temporary location within our Museum.

Feel free to email me directly off list to share any pearls of wisdom.

Thank you in advance!
