Museums, tourism and the visitor experience

Rotorua, New Zealand
24-28 November 2008

www.intercom.museum

Dear colleagues,

We are busy planning this year's exciting INTERCOM conference, which will
take place in Rotorua New Zealand. We would hereby like to invite you to
submit proposals for presentations, case studies, research papers and best
practice models that demonstrate how museums can face the challenges we are
discussing this year. The focus is on museums as tourist destinations,
audience development and enhancing the experience and welcome and quality of
the museum visit.

Cultural tourism accounts for a large proportion of all travel to
destinations around the world and visiting museums is a key motivation for
many tourists.

How do museums respond to the tourist market?
How do museums keep up with new technologies and techniques?
How do museums provide an enhanced visitor experience for an increasingly
demanding public?
How do museums keep up with leisure trends and manage their external
environment?
What are the opportunities and challenges to welcome new audiences?
What makes a quality visit?

The conference will explore these themes further through a combination of
international speakers, presentations and workshop sessions and visits to
key cultural tourism products in the Rotorua area and beyond. Please visit
the conference website (www.intercom.museum) for details about all aspects
of the conference.
