Chris - Your glasses and the adhesive must be handled with care, however the first thing to find out is whether the adhesive is water soluable. Hopefully this is the case and it will make the process much easier. Find a way to submerge the glasses and shelf in water for a period of time to see if the adhesive loosens. If not, you may need to resort to a solution that will work on the material yet will not harm the object. This is a conservators realm and your best bet would be to call in an expert. Laurie Booth at Midwest Conservation Services specializes in glass and ceramics and she might be able to instruct you further. Her number is 614-873-4880. Welcome to the world of ancient exhibit practices! Best luck and take it slow...
