New-York Historical Society Collections Manager Full-time position with benefits; salary in high 30s to low 40s commensurate with experience. In the year 2000, the Society will open the Henry Luce Center for the Study of American Culture, a state-of-the art collections facility which will bring the majority of the Society's museum collections out of storage and make them permanently accessible to the public. In anticipation of this new facility, The New-York Historical Society is accepting applications for the position of Collections Manager. Until the Luce center opens, the successful applicant will devote most of his or her time to supervising and coordinating the move of these newly-catalogued collections from off-site collections storage to the Society's heaadqarters on Central Park West and to another off-site collections storage facility. This will involve coordinating any remaining re-housing needs, planning and implementing a system for tracking the movement and locations of objects, and supervising the packing of objects for relocation. Other duties will include: the general supervision of teh off-site storage facility up until and throughout the move; the administration of contractural personnel and staff involved in collections cataloguing, digitization, and conservation assesment and treatment; acting as a liason between off-site storage staff and teh Luce center project Manager, and the general supervision adn coordination of other more long-term collections management issues such as the development of a prioritized plan for conservation assesment, and updating the Society's collections management procedures and policies. The successful applicant will report to the Luce center Project manager. he or she will work closely with the full-time Collections Management Associate who is presently in charge of incoming and outgoing loans, fielding collection viewing and research requests, and tracking in-house collections movement. Qualifications: Graduate or advanced degree in History, American Studies, or related field with at least four years of collections management experience working in a team atmosphere.
