A FRENCH GILT-BRONZE AND ORMOLU STRIKING MANTEL CLOCK, SECOND QUARTER OF THE
19TH CENTURY

Second quarter of the 19th Century. An impressive French figural mantle
clock. Contrasting dark patinated bronze with gilt highlights.

The arched case surmounted by figures of Sophia goddess of wisdom holding a
book and Cupid hoding a frond, with relief mount to the frfont depicting a
woman in clasical drapery, on a rectangular base with bellflower and
anthemion cast gallery, on marmo verde antico base with relief panel to the
front depicting amorini engaged in activities emblematic of the Arts and
Sciences, with feet to the front modelled as recumbent lions, the white
enamel Roman dial with trefoil hands, the twin train movement with
countwheel striking on bell. Stamped for Japy Freres.
