Sakhi for South Asian Women is a non-profit organization in New York City working to end violence against women through outreach, advocacy, leadership development, and community organizing. 1999 will mark Sakhi's 10 Year Anniversary. In celebration of this important turning point, Sakhi will be launching a series of awareness-building and fund-raising events. We are currently looking for a qualified, energetic individual to work on a six month basis to organize a national, four-city tour of the landmark photo exhibit organized by Point of View, a non-profit collective of women in media based in India. The exhibit, entitled "50 Years of Independence: What Have Women Got?" powerfully captures the challenges and triumphs of the women of India. As part of promoting partnerships and increasing the dialogue on issues important to South Asian women, Sakhi will be bringing this photo-exhibit to the US and organize showings in New York, Washington DC, Chicago and San Francisco. Responsibilities include: · Developing a comprehensive media and promotions plan for the exhibit in conjunction with Program Director and Sakhi Board. · Working with Point Of View staff to bring the exhibit to the US · Working with local South Asian organizations to arrange educational events · Coordinating logistics for the tour of the exhibit, including - arranging for the travel of the exhibit from India to the US and within the US; arranging for gallery space and time in each city; organizing opening event gala in New York. · Arranging for travel for the exhibit, as well as P.O.V staff, Sakhi staff/board to each city. · Developing materials to promote the exhibit - press release, brochure, etc. · Working with the fundraising committee to identify and raise financial support. Required Qualifications: 3-5 years experience with special events planning; fund-raising experience; strong organizational and writing and public speaking skills; coalition building experience; experience in developing and implementing media and publicity strategies; ability to work well individually and as a team; and computer proficiency. Traveling required for six weeks with the exhibit, beginning in late April. Desired but not required: experience in South Asian history, women's movement, and anti-violence work.
