I missed the first post to this thread, I'm afraid.

Buckinghamshire County Museum staff conduced focus-group interviews
during its 'closed' period (late 80s/early 90s).  From this, the staff
learnt that what non-visitors wanted, and what visitors wanted.  I
joined the staff after this period, but what my job-share partner, and
her colleagues had found out drove the process of re-displaying the
collections.
