Position Available Director of Education California Historical Society The California Historical Society seeks a motivated, energetic person to assume the new position of Director of Education and be responsible for the design, organization and implementation of the Society's education programs. The Director of Education will report to the Executive Director but will work closely with fine arts, library, photography and administrative staff. The California Historical Society is an independent non-profit institution dedicated to the history of California and the West. The Society's holdings include a fine arts collection, research library and photography collection. Housed in a newly renovated facility adjacent to the centrally-located Yerba Buena Center in downtown San Francisco, the S ociety presents six to eight exhibitions annually, hosts lectures and events, and publishes a quarterly journal. The Society's educational programming will contribute to the effort to make history a liveley;, vital and relevant part of the lives of a diverse audience. The duties of the Director of Education will include: + Develop and implement programs with schools, including creating gallery tours and activities, preparing materials for teachers, designing outreach programs. +Organize adult programs, including lectures, workshops and walking tours. +Oversee docent program, including recruiting and training volunteers. +Assist with exhibition development and the production of wall lables and related supplementary materials. Candidates should have at least three years experience in museum education or comparable experience. M.A. degree in education, museum studies or related fields preferred. A degree of familiarity with California history as well as a working knowledge of word processing and database technology helpful. Candidates must be willing to handle a variety of tasks, work easily with a number of people with divergent skills and interests and work calmly and capably under pressure.
