You may be right that this is a golden age because, indeed the management
functions within the museum buildings have improved.  I think all periods
of transition are so messy while they are occuring that the humans swept
up in those transitions often have trouble seeing the silver lining.  And
progress is usually not a straight ascent but two steps forward and one
backwards in nature.  I still think the largest problems for non-profits
in the US is that they are the only segment of society where the final
decision-making authority (trustees) rests with hobbyists who have never
worked in a non-profit.  They usually don't really understand education,
culture, art or non-profit accounting.
