Harry, the Colorado Spring Fine Arts Center, has a small permanent installation, called The Tactile Gallery, designed especially for the visually impaired. The font size on the labels must be 48 points. All the objects, including sculpture, costumes, and glass, are selected for their tactile interest, as well as artistic merit. A budget separate from the regular collection budget is devoted to purchasing and maintaining the objects, and they are rotated every six weeks to prevent their rapid deterioration. Special "lazy Susan" mounts allow visitors to examine all sides of the objects, and everything is securely fastened to prevent tumbling. Though small, it is impressive. The curators said it has been extremely popular with all visitors. I caught myself relishing the feel of a lovely bronze that was installed that day. They are soon to begin developing an outdoor tour that will feature scents, sounds, textures, and shapes. You might want to give them a call.
