I found this to be extremely true.  We just installed a "historical"
exhibition of the work of well-known area artists the Art Center has worked
with since 1934.  The exhibition has lots of text--more than we usually
include and certainly way beyond my own installation preferences--but since
most of our audience lived through the period and personally knew the
artists, they read every single word avidly.  Time spent reading labels--10
minutes per 100-word intro text, 2-3 minutes per 30-word object label.
