Well, to start with, check if your institution has scholarship funding to assist grad students going to conferences. Many do, altho some require you be a presenter or read a paper... (Which IS a great way to make a good impression on the potential hiring world...) As well, many conferences and professional societies help w/ funding to attend for students and new professionals. I just got back from the ALHFAM conference in Texas, which had 4-5 students attending supported by either their institution or ALHFAM scholarships, as well as 3-4 new professionals being partially reimbusrsed for travel.
