According to *Museums Count* (published results of 1988-89 data survey), there are 8,179 museums in the U.S. When IMS did a study of the needs of "small, minority, emerging and rural museums" in 1991, they cast a wider net (i.e., they used a looser definition) and came up with several thousand more museums.
