Recommendations from my Minneapolis-dwelling niece: The rumor is true there's little to be had in the way of "authentic" Mexican food. However, the Loring Cafe is alive and thriving and is a great place for food and people-watching. In the warehouse District you always get an outstanding meal at Tacchio's (tends toward the Mediterranean), and sometimes live jazz. Cafe Brenda has gourmet vegetarian food, Cafe Solo is good cuisine typically focused on local foods, Chez Bananas is an off-beat atmosphere with good Caribbean cooking. These are all within a several block radius. A more spendy but fantastic meal can be had at Table of Contents, on Hennepin - also home of a fun martini list. Those venturing toward the Mpls Institute of Arts would get great Greek food at Christo's and inexpensive German food at The Black Forest, both on Nicollet. In the Uptown area, the New French Kitchen and D'Amico's are good stops next door to the Lagoon Theater (specializing in foreign and off-broadway film). Maybe I should stop there!
