The appointment will be made at the Professorial level and the successful applicant will have the dual responsibility of managing and developing one of the foremost collections of archival, oral and ethnographic material in KwaZulu-Natal and, in association with the Humanities Faculties in both Pietermaritzburg and Durban, of stimulating research and graduate studies in disciplines related to the content of the Collections. A Doctorate and proven research and publication record in disciplines such as History and particularly Southern African History, Social or Cultural Anthropology, Archaeology and Cultural Studies are a sine quo non of the position. Evidence of success in multidisciplinary research and teaching will be a strong recommendation, as will be the experience of working in and leading multidisciplinary research teams. Managerial and fund-raising skills will be an essential component of the position and hands-on experience of using and/or curating archival, manuscripts and ethnographic material, and experience of moving beyond traditional techniques of preservation and dissemination to computerisation and electronic resource networking will be a recommendation. Advantageous also will be a familiarity with both local and international debates in museumology and in cultural and artistic representation in museum and exhibitiion display. A working knowledge of archival and ethnographic collections in KwaZulu-Natal, especially of the Campbell Collections, will be a strong recommendation.
