The University of Alberta, Department of Museums and Collections Services invite s applications for a temporary full-time Special Projects Assistant. This is a con tract position to 31 March 1996. Following defined museums standards, the incumbent will coordi nate the planning, organization and implementation activities related a variety of specia l projects within the collections management/central art collection program areas of the departmen t. The incumbent will be responsible for: 1. coordinating the move of approximately 1,000 works of art on paper, under su pervision from the Assistant Registrar. Tasks to be carried out include: -planning and scheduling the move of prints (preparing a project budget and time line, ordering supplies, establishing and ensuring deadlines are met, ensuring standards are ma intained, and coordinating efforts of staff from various departments involved in the move), -supervising and assigning duties for up to three temporary staff (generating pr e- and post-move shelf lists from a computerized database, carrying out a physical inventory and condition report prior to and after the move, updating location and condition fields in a compute rized database during all phases of the move, creating special packing boxes for large, unmatte d works, creating and applying shelf labels in the new facility, loading and unloading transport vehic le, and unpacking and storing solander boxes and unmatted works), -establishing unit and shelf designations, arranging for transport vehicle, assi sting with completion of tasks as required, coordinating tours of Print Room Collection; -after the move is complete, participating in training Art and Design staff and students in correct documenting, handling and storage of works of art on paper, as well as p roviding instruction in the use of database management software to Art and Design staff a nd students. 2. assisting with the planning, organization and implementation activities rela ted to the installation of database management software at specific University collection s ites, under supervision from the Collections Management Coordinator. Specific duties will in clude assisting ith the coordination of the following: -communications between various University groups (e.g., Computing and Network S ervices staff, departmental/faculty network administrators, collections representatives) ; -writing proposals for project support to various funding bodies; -establishing the specified hardware/software environment; -mapping of previously computerized data in preparation for conversion to the ne w database environment; -data conversion; -documenting backlogged object/specimen acquisitions; -entering data into the new database environment; -continuing to enhance data within the new database environment (e.g., performin g global edits, creating pop-up lists, developing customized reports as required, etc.); -cleaning up object/specimen storage; -creating/applying new storage location labels; -exporting data to the Canadian Heritage Information Network's Index for Canadia n Heritage; and -writing project evaluation reports for submission to various funding bodies. Minimum qualifications include a bachelors degree, with a minimum of 2 years exp erience in a client/server computing environment. Knowledge of automated operating procedur es and the ability to troubleshoot are essential to the success of the noted pro jects. Previous experience within a museum environment, with the Canadian Herita ge Information Network, and/or the Oracle relational database management system is an asset. The current salary range for this temporary position is $2193 - 2750 per month p lus 4% vacation pay, CPP, UIC and WCB.
