We have treated fossil wood at CCI which was completely non-mineralized using PEG 200 at ca. 10% - 15% v/v - and then freeze drying. Success depends on the presence of cellulose in the wood - ours was ca. 50% cellulose 50% lignin. We also treated delicate fossil leaves with the Parylene ,ethod which is available in Italy as "Galaxyl" marketed by a subsidiary of Montecatini Edison. - If you are interested we would be happy to send more information on the details of our work David Grattan ______________________________ Reply Separator _________________________________ Subject: Information on wood conservation Author: Scott Williams at CANADIAN-CONSERVATION Date: 2/15/95 9:33 AM fyi re wood arch/fossil wood conservation ______________________________ Forward Header __________________________________ Subject: Information on wood conservation Author: Museum discussion list <[log in to unmask]> at INTERNET Date: 2/14/95 9:02 AM Re ceived: by ccmail from aa.chin.doc.ca Fr om @uga.cc.uga.edu:[log in to unmask] X- Envelope-From: @uga.cc.uga.edu:[log in to unmask] Re ceived: from uga.cc.uga.edu by aa.chin.doc.ca with SMTP (5.65/1.2-eef) id AA11471; Mon, 13 Feb 95 20:53:57 -0500 Re turn-Path: <@uga.cc.uga.edu:[log in to unmask]> Me ssage-Id: <[log in to unmask]> Re ceived: from UGA.CC.UGA.EDU by uga.cc.uga.edu (IBM VM SMTP V2R2) wi th BSMTP id 5081; Mon, 13 Feb 95 21:26:25 EST Re ceived: from UGA.CC.UGA.EDU (NJE origin LISTSERV@UGA) by UGA.CC.UGA.EDU (LMail V .2a/1.8a) with BSMTP id 2017; Mon, 13 Feb 1995 14:33:37 -0500 Da te: Sun, 12 Feb 1995 17:14:25 +0100 Re ply-To: Museum discussion list <[log in to unmask]> Se nder: Museum discussion list <[log in to unmask]> From: Mauro Giraldo <[log in to unmask]> Subject: Information on wood conservation X-To: [log in to unmask] To: Multiple recipients of list MUSEUM-L <[log in to unmask]> Dear Museum-L readers, I'm a student of University of Padova (Italy), interested in conservation metods and restoration techniques of some SUBFOSSIL WOODS extracted in 1992-9 3 by a paleontologist excavation in Steggio location (Italy). These woods were well conserved and integer at the moment of discovery because sited in a clayey coat. At the moment they are cutted in pieces of 1 meter long and plunged in a tub with water and quaternary ammonium salts. I would like to know if : - is possible to use PEG ? - any specific instruments are needed ? - how can we conserve leaves ? - are there other news about wood conservation of (and where can I find then) ? - where can I ask about this metter (possible in Italy or in Europe) ? Thanks in advance Mauro Giraldo
