I have seen only one storage area (Art Institute of Chicago - Textile
Collection) where a high ceilinged storage room was actually made into two
floors, with a metal staircase up to the second floor with additional
ranges of cabinets the stairs.  Is this what you mean?  I don't know how
they feel about it (I've never seen anyone from AIC on the list), but if it
is one and the same, it would behoove you to get in touch with them.  They
have had this arrangement for sometime.
