Last week, Senator Byrd and Senator Nickles (R-OK), the Interior Appropriations subcommittee's ranking Republican member, expressed deep concern in a strongly worded letter to NEA Chair Jane Alexander about the NEA's funding of the Ron Athey performance at the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis. They also warned that future NEA funding is in jeopardy without safeguards to ensure that programs and projects they find " grossly improper" are not undertaken. The committee's action to recommend a 5% cut is NOT JUST AN ACROSS THE BOARD REDUCTION, BUT WOLD TARGET MORE THAT $7 MILLION IN REDUCTIONS IN THE THEATRE, VISUAL ARTS, AND INTER ARTS PROGRAMS of the endowment - meaning arbitrary cuts of up to 45% in some of those programs.
