We think the box dates to the 1940s. As far as I've been able to find out Whitman's started using the cross-stitch sampler design on their boxes around 1912. However, I know of many companies that have done special package for various events as collector's item, which is why we aren't dismissing the possibility that it could actually be a Whitman's box. >But having wood as an interior would retain any moisture in the air and >thus >creating a way for mold to grow on the chocolate. Not yummy. That's the main reason we question it being a Whitman's box and as far as we can tell the wood lining is original to the box.
