Other good nonfiction includes 'The Midwife's Tale' by Laurel Thatcher Ulrich.  She takes excerpts from a late-18th century New England midwife's journal and interprets it to illuminate different analyses of society at that time.  'Everybody Was So Young' by Amanda Vaill.  The story of Gerald and Sara Murphy, the bright lights of the Lost Generation and the inspiration for Fitzgerald's characters in 'Tender Is the Night.'

Here's a great historical fiction that was inspired by the true story of the Third U.S. Colored Calvary during the Civil War - "Where I'm Bound" by Alan Ballard.  Dr. Ballad is a renowned African-American historian at the University at Albany - his work is wonderful!
