Dear Colleagues, As Planetarium Director for Central Texas College, I am pleased to announce two immediate planetarium job openings. Central Texas College seeks two dedicated and talented individuals from the planetarium/museum field to serve as "Planetarium Producer/Educator" and "Planetarium Technician" to help open and operate a state-of-the-art Planetarium and Space Theater in beautiful central Texas. Central Texas College (CTC) is located in Killeen, about an hour north of the state capital in Austin. The area is surrounded by rolling farmland, lakes and abundant wildlife. Killeen has a population of approximately 90,000 and lies adjacent to Fort Hood military base which itself employs over 40,000. The cost of living is considerably lower than many places I have lived. Neighboring communities include the cities of Temple, Belton, Harker Heights and Copperas Cove. The Planetarium, which will open sometime this year features a 60ft. Astro- Tec dome, Minolta Infinium Gamma II star projector, MegaSystems 8/70 Large Format Film System, AVI Laser Graphics System, Sky Skan theater lighting control & slide automation system, panorama, all-sky and video projection capabilities. The facility will be among the largest and best equipped in Texas, with a star field that is second to none in the state. Here are the job descriptions and salaries: Planetarium Producer/Educator (Full Time, Monday through Friday with some evenings & weekends required) Salary: $29 - 33,000 (DOE) full benefits package Description: The Planetarium Producer/Educator works under the immediate supervision of the Planetarium Director. This position is responsible for all audio and visual materials used in the Planetarium theater, including school and public programs, laser shows and special events, including original soundtrack production, laser, computer graphics, and slide production. The producer/educator conducts most planetarium school programs. All Planetarium staff are expected to assist, cross train and, on occasion, substitute for other staff as needed. Occasional weekend and evening work is required. Education: Bachelor's degree, preferably in astronomy, education or closely related discipline. Texas teaching certification is helpful but not required. Copies of college transcripts are required with application. Experience: A minimum of 3 years as a show producer, systems programmer, or program director at a planetarium, museum, science center, tv station or similar multi-media production environment is expected. Preference will be given to individuals with previous planetarium experience. Skills: Must be able to identify, evaluate, obtain, and prepare production materials including 35mm slides, video, laser and computer graphics files, special effects, et cetera, for presentation in a variety of planetarium programs. Must have excellent public speaking skills for presentation of curriculum-aligned school programs to all grade levels. Must possess excellent writing skills for development of pre and post visit educational materials. Qualifications: Possesses a strong working knowledge of astronomy and space exploration. Must have a working knowledge of the following (or closely related) planetarium production and presentation systems: optical/mechanical planetarium star projector; large format film projection, laser graphics projection, audio, video and slide projection systems, and planetarium automation/control systems. Strong working knowledge of astronomy and space exploration. Experience in either classroom education or informal learning environments such as planetaria, museums. Duties and Responsibilities Assist the Planetarium Director in the selection, purchase, and development of audio/visual production materials including 35mm slide, video, laser and computer graphics files, special effects, et cetera. Maintain adequate inventories of all audio/visual production supplies. Scan 35mm slides into digital format for manipulation as needed, and arrange for digital image output back to 35mm format as dictated by production timelines. Modify digital image files as needed, using DigiDome, PaintShop-Pro, and Adobe PhotoShop software. Assist the Planetarium Director with development of pre and post-visit educational materials. Assist the Planetarium Director as needed with research, writing of in- house productions. Serve as the principal programmer of the SkySkan automation system, Minolta star projector and AVI Laser Graphics system. Establish, maintain and develop the Planetarium's 35mm "Astronomical Slide File." Photograph, scan or download images and artwork for slide, video and exhibit production. Develop original graphic artwork and diagrams for use in School Programs, Public Sky Shows and Laser shows. Help identify age/grade appropriate educational materials in both print and electronic media. Assist in the alignment of program content with state and national science education standards. Present live and automated planetarium programs to visiting school groups. Other duties as assigned by the Planetarium Director. Conduct one-on-one program training and checkout of part-time, volunteer, student and faculty workers as assigned by the Planetarium Director. Assist the Planetarium Director in the development and staging of exhibitions and displays in the Planetarium Lobby area. NOTE: Management reserves the right to change the above duties and responsibilities at any time. Planetarium staff are expected to assist, cross train and, on occasion, substitute for other staff as needed. Planetarium Technician (Full Time, Monday through Friday with some evenings & weekends required) Salary: $23,200 - $26,100 (DOE) full benefits package Description: The Planetarium Technician is responsible for maintaining all planetarium audio/visual and electronic equipment and serves as the master projectionist for large format film presentations. All Planetarium staff are expected to assist, cross train and, on occasion, substitute for other staff. Education: Bachelor's degree preferred. Associates degree accepted with exceptional relevant work experience. Experience: A minimum of 3 years as a technician, systems programmer, or technical director at a planetarium, museum, science center, tv station or similar multi-media production environment is expected. Preference will be given to individuals with previous planetarium experience. Skills: Must be able to install, repair (or arrange for repairs), maintain and upgrade planetarium audio/visual projection equipment including slide and video projectors. Qualifications: Must have a working knowledge of the following (or closely related) planetarium projection systems: optical/mechanical planetarium star projector; large format film projection, laser graphics projection, audio, video and slide projection systems, and planetarium automation/control systems. Duties and Responsibilities Conduct regular preventive maintenance and repairs, or supervise assisted maintenance, of all Planetarium audio/visual production and presentation equipment, including optics, electronics, etc, ensuring that all equipment is maintained in optimum working condition. Schedule, supervise and record all work done as part of contractual preventive maintenance agreements (PMA's) for theater systems requiring them, such as Minolta and MegaSystems. Establish and maintain a comprehensive "Planetarium Maintenance Log." Maintain adequate inventories of all theater supplies including projection lamps, batteries, cleaning materials, etc. Design and fabricate, or purchase auxiliary and special effect devices as dictated by Planetarium production goals. Supervise the integration, and assist with the programming of the automation, star projector, laser and film systems. Act as lead projectionist for the Large Format Film Projection system. Assist in Sky Show production as needed. Conduct one-on-one equipment training and checkout of part-time, volunteer, student and faculty workers as assigned by the Planetarium Director. Assist in the training of part time workers, volunteers, students, and faculty members by developing and maintaining an up-to-date, user- friendly "Operator's Manual" for all major Planetarium theater systems and sub-systems. Assist in the development, and supervise the staging of exhibitions and displays in the Planetarium Lobby area. Identify and assist in the evaluation of emerging planetarium-related technologies suitable for potential future implementation at CTC. Other duties as assigned by the Planetarium Director.
