Hi Susan,

As a quick fix so you won't lose any more of the fire place try Paraloid B72. First do some small tests with the Paraloid and its different solvents (acetone, xylene, etc… . You don’t want to dissolve the painting).

Carefully, glue the flakes back… tedious work but that is what Conservation is at times :)

This will give you time to look for a better long-term solution.

Be careful and good luck,

Subject: Stabilizing painted mural

Hello Everyone,
I have a conservation question that we would could use some help on at my
museum. I work on the Battleship TEXAS which is a pre-World War I
dreadnought primarily made of steel. In one of the unrestored compartments
is a charming mural of a fireplace painted by some long-a-go sailor. It is
most likely lead-based paint on lead-based paint over a steel bulkhead
(wall) and is flaking badly. The flaking is possibly due to some rust on
the bulkhead. Do any of the conservators among you have any ideas how to
stabalize the fireplace so that we don't lose anymore of it? Thanks ahead
of time.
