I would like to mention an exhibit that, in my (admittedly biased) opinion,
has not received enough attention (not enough of a perceived "blockbuster"
for this day and age perhaps?) The exhibit is Ainu: Spirit of a Northern
People at my own museum The National Museum of Natural History in
Washington, D.C. and it runs through Jan. 2, 2000. It is well worth a visit
to learn about the Ainu of Northern Japan, a people not particularly well
known outside Japan. The exhibit covers Ainu history but also includes art
of contemporary Ainu artists. There are wonderful artifacts gathered from a
number of museums. There is also an excellent accompanying catalogue.
Sadly it appears efforts to travel this show will not pan out (cost, time
conflicts at possible venues, etc., etc., from what I understand) so
Washington, D.C. will probably be the only place you can see it. If you are
in town for business or pleasure I urge you to make time for this show.
There will probably not be another exhibit on the Ainu in our lifetime ...
not in North America anyway.
