GENERAL POSITION DESCRIPTION:
Responsible to the Park Manager for duties pertaining to
interpretation, curation, clerical and visitor services of the Plantation
House Museum and Cottage Headquarters at Varner-Hogg State Historical Park.
Researches and develops programs including exhibits, tours, educational
programs and seminars. Coordinates, develops and implements resource
management programs to include artifact, archives and furnishings
preservation, conservation and inventory. Supervises staff in the
maintenance/housekeeping duties for historic/interpretive facility. Assists
with promotions, special events, and marketing. Co-supervises the
Varner-Hogg Volunteer program. Works with the community to further local
relationships and partnerships. Assist with grant writing and fund raising.
Prepares park reports, maintains and develops administrative and
interpretive files.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
(1) Fast paced public historical day park; (2) Forty hour week
includes flexible schedules, hours other that 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., days
off other than Saturday, Sunday and holidays; (3) Occasional travel; (4)
Duties include outdoor work in all types of weather; (5) Physical activities
including lifting supplies and materials; (5) Must conform to agency work
rules, safety procedures and dress and grooming standards.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:
Education: (1) Graduation from an accredited college or university
with a Bachelor's Degree with course work in park administration, recreation
and parks, natural and/or cultural resource management, history, museum
studies, or education; (2) One year of full-time qualifying experience as
listed in the experience section below may substitute for the required
education at the rate of one year of experience equals 30 semester hours,
with a maximum substitution of three years for 90 hours from an accredited
college or university.
Experience: Two years of full-time work experience such as: Artifact
conservation and archives management; Developing and presenting interpretive
programs; Staff and volunteer management and training; Special event
planning and public relations. Experience may have been obtained
concurrently.
License: Must possess or be able to obtain a valid Class A Texas
driver's license.
SELECTION CRITERIA:
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: (1) Knowledge of basic artifact and
furnishings management; (2) Knowledge of interpretive techniques such as
exhibit development and implementation, publication preparation; (3)
Knowledge of English, spelling, grammar, punctuation and math; (4) Knowledge
of research resources; (5) Knowledge of special event planning and
implementation; (6) Skill in verbal and in written communication; (7) Skill
in progressive public relations and community interaction; (8) Ability to
develop and present accurate, creative interpretive programs for all ages;
(9) Ability to use electronic office equipment including PC with word
processing and spreadsheet software; (10) Ability to maintain strict
confidentiality, work as a member of a team, and represent the park in a
professional manner; (11) Ability to work in an environment with
distractions and frequent changes in priorities; (12) Ability to use sound
judgment and make independent decisions; (13) Ability to work with the
public in a friendly, professional manner; (14) Ability to organize records
files; (15) Ability to in train and manage volunteers; (16) Ability to plan
special events; (17) Ability to write grant applications.
