I would like to offer hope to anyone thinking about moving to the DC area
and living on an entry-level salary. I currently live right outside the
district (in a safe, fun neighborhood) with a total commuting time of 25
minutes to my job in downtown DC. I pay less than $500 a month for rent and
I do not consider my metro fare to be terribly exorbitant (about 2.50 a
day). Additionally, I am not an anomaly as many of my friends and
colleagues have been able to find similar living arrangements in the DC area
while living on non-profit wages. Thus, if anyone is thinking about moving
to the area, it is possible to live comfortably!
