The Federal Highway Administration owns 109 original oil paintings by Carl
Rakeman.  Mr. Rakeman painted them during the 30 years he was an employee of
the Bureau of Public Roads, precursor of the Federal Highway Administration. 
We are especially proud of these paintings because they contribute
significantly to the history of transportation in the United States.  They
serve as some of the best visual representations of the growth and development
of this country.  Mr. Rakeman painted this collection from 1921 to 1952. 
Among Mr. Rakeman*s most important works are his murals in Washington, D.C.,
particularly the one adjoining the Senate Committee Room on Appropriations in
the Capitol.  

The complete inventory of our paintings is shown and described in the book,
Historic American Roads from Frontier Trails to Superhighways, by Albert C.
Rose, illustrated by Carl Rakeman.  This book is out-of-print but is available
through a used-book search on the Internet.

The paintings are currently on loan to the Hayes Presidential Center in
Fremont, Ohio.  Due to a renovation at the Hayes Center, the paintings will
need to be permanently relocated.  The Federal Highway Administration will
have the paintings appraised, restored (as necessary), and moved to a holding
facility early in calendar year 2000.

The Federal Highway Administration would like to discuss lending 93 of the
original oil paintings and 16 framed prints to a museum that agrees to display
the pictures.  A 9x11 text panel describes each painting.  The 93 framed oil
paintings are each about 4  feet by 3  feet.  The 16 framed color prints are
each about 29 inches by 22 inches.
