What about placing the book in an acid-free, archival cover to protect the
book from light, dust, etc. The cover also acts as a sort of buffer when
there are environmental changes. The number could be written on the outside
of this cover. The type of protective covering I am describing can be found
in archival ordering catalogs (such as Gaylord, etc.)
Just a suggestion.
