To Laura P.:
With your experience and your expertise, figure out something that you'd like
to do as a museum consultant. Call museums nearby that you think might need
your services. Focus on one or two things that you do really well and where
there will be a need. Do some research first and determine your prices and
timelines for projects. Network with a few colleagues who would be likely to
hire you.
I've gotten almost all of my professional jobs by first working for those
institutions as a consultant. It gives you and the employer a chance to get
to know each other. It also gives you an edge when positions open.
