I don't share David's pessimism about the mathematical probability of a
proportion of job seekers NEVER being able to find a job in a Museum.
It is true that worldwide, ours is a VERY competitive profession. That said,
I have found that those who remain single-minded in their purpose and
prepared to be adaptable in their approach, DO succeed. This adaptability
may also necessitate relocation. Equally ( and my own career path is
witness to this phenomenon! ) all of us can realistically look forward to at
least two changes of career path in our lifetime. Gone are the days are a
'job for life' in a single institution and that may be no bad thing.
The above does not necessarily assist Laura in her quest but I have given
considerable thought to how a checklist for job aspirants might be compiled
to assist the process.
Museum L has provided many great suggestions in recent weeks and I have
added some other ideas and links of associated interest.
List members may like to go to the CAREERS section of Global Museum and have
a look at the HOT JOB TIPS section. All other positive suggestions would be
welcomed and added to the list.
With best wishes
Roger
