I had a similar problem with some objects that were in a recent fire. The objects were full of smoke and the smell of burnt plastic. I stored them wrapped in plastic sheeting, with the edges taped up, until I was able to consult a conservator. He suggested, that if I wanted to removed the smell to simply put a container with baking soda in with the objects.
However, seeing as how your coat is from the 40's, I would suggest discussing the promblem with a conservator.
