That would be "Motel of the Mysteries" by David McCaullay (McCauly?). He also wrote the books simply entitled "Cathedral", "Ship", "City", "Castle", "Pyramid" and "Underground" which have wonderful pencil and ink drawings in them and great explainations on how each was built.
