Lisa, Robin,
This is definitely a Frequently Asked Question. It's worth going to the
Museum-L Archive
http://home.dc.lsoft.com/archives/museum-l.html
and searching for "collections" and "software".
Also, you're asking at the right time. CHIN has just released the third
edition of the Collections Management Software Review, available at
http://www.chin.gc.ca/Resources/Collect_Mgnt/e_hp_cmser.html
There's also helpful information available from CHIN on how to go about
assessing and choosing new software.

Subject: Collections software
My museum is planning to buy a new collections software program. Right
now we have SNAP for DOS, but want to upgrade. I have been looking at
PastPerfect, Argus, and a couple of others. I would appreciate any
opinions people have on which programs they like best and why. Thanks.
