SUCCESS TAKES TOLL ON THE POMPIDOU CENTER by John Rockwell (ARTS C15,21)
The "symbol of zippy cultural modernity in Paris" may close for
a year and a half for partial reconstruction. A victim of its own
success (over 7 million use it each year), the main need is to
reorganize the center's space. It has a $90 million annual budget
and the new work is estimated at $70 to $120 million. Prime Minister
Edouard Balladur is expected to make an announcement at a ceremony
on April 5.
That's it.
