SOLINET, Inc., the Southeastern Library Network, is pleased to
announce our Summer 1999 preservation workshop schedule:
****************DIGITAL IMAGING: PRESERVATION ISSUES****************
The increase in digital imaging projects for library and archival
collections raises many issues related to selection, resource
allocation, and long-term access (preservation). This two-day workshop
provides an introduction to the technology of digital imaging and
addresses the following questions: What collections or resources are
appropriate for digital conversion? How will digital files be
maintained? Who is responsible for ensuring future access to this
digital information? Is future access necessary? Through lecture,
discussion and case studies participants will gain the tools needed to
make informed decisions about imaging project planning.
The instructors are Faye Phillips, Assistant Dean of Libraries for
Special Collections, and Charles Thomas, Archivist, both of Louisiana
State University.
The two-day workshop will be held at the University of South Florida,
Tampa, FL on Thursday-Friday, July 22-23, 1999 from 9am - 4pm.
Cost is $155 SOLINET members ($145 early bird, $180 late
registration); $215 Non-SOLINET members and FEDLINK ($205 early bird,
$240 late registration). Any institution within Florida qualifies for
the member rate.
**************DISASTER PREPAREDNESS AND RECOVERY*************
Libraries and archives are vulnerable to a variety of disasters
ranging from fires and flooding to roof leaks and mold outbreaks.
Through lecture, group exercises and demonstrations, this one and a
half-day workshop will provide the training necessary to plan,
organize and execute a disaster plan and salvage operation. Winston
Atkins, Preservation Librarian, North Carolina State University and
Patricia Palmer, Head, Preservation Services, Virginia Commonwealth
University are the instructors.
This 1 & 1/2 day workshop is scheduled for Thursday - Friday,
August 19-20, 1999 from 9am - 4pm Day 1 and 9am-12pm Day 2 at
Virginia Commonwealth University, Richmond, VA.
Cost is $135 SOLINET members ($125 early bird, $160 late
registration); $175 Non-SOLINET members and FEDLINK ($165 early bird,
$200 late registration). Any institution within Virginia qualifies
for the member rate.
The registration fee of this workshop includes a box lunch.
********************FUNDAMENTALS OF BOOK REPAIR**********************
This two-day workshop is designed for staff members who actually
perform book repair in libraries and is useful also to those who
supervise repair units. The workshop will teach staff members how to
perform simple, economical, and preservation quality repairs on
materials in general, circulating and reference collections. The
following procedures will be taught in small groups modules through
demonstration and practices:
* Tightening hinges when text block are pulled away from the
cover
* Replacing torn endsheets
* Replacing torn or damaged spines
* Mending paper
* Tipping and hinging pages into bound volumes
The workshop will NOT cover techniques for the repair of materials
that are special, rare, or archival. Instructors are Christine
Wiseman, SOLINET Preservation Education Officer and Tina Mason,
SOLINET Preservation Field Service Officer.
The workshop will be held on Thursday-Friday, August 12-13, 1999 at
Columbia Theological Seminary, Decatur, GA. from 8:30am-5pm.
Cost is $155 SOLINET members ($145 early bird, $180 late
registration); $215 non-members ($205 early bird, $240 late
registration). Any institution within Georgia qualifies for the
member rate.
Included with the registration fee is an extensive book repair kit
containing a variety of tools and supplies.
**********************HURRICANE PREPAREDNESS*************************
Hurricane Preparedness: Making Sure Your Institution Survives the Big
One is scheduled for Monday, August 2, 199 at the University of North
Carolina, Wilmington, NC.
Learn about steps that can be taken before a storm hits that can
increase an institution's chances for minimizing damage; and steps
that can be taken to minimize loss after a storm. This one-day
workshop focuses on the nature of hurricanes, general issues in
developing a disaster plan, making your institution storm-proof,
activities before, during and after the storm, and sources of
assistance.
Instructor for this session is Dr. Michael Trinkley, Director of
Chicora Foundation.
Cost is $95 SOLINET members ($85 early bird, $120 late registration);
$135 Non-SOLINET members and FEDLINK ($125 early bird, $160 late
registration). Any institution within North Carolina qualifies for the
member rate.
******************INTERMEDIATE BOOK REPAIR**********************
This two-day hands-on workshop is deigned to hone repair skills
learned in Fundamentals of Book Repair. Participants are able to
participate more advanced techniques for general collections repair,
as well as construct enclosures for special collections. Discussion
addresses treatment decision making, properties of adhesives, and
managing a book repair operation.
Participants in SOLINET's Fundamentals of Book Repair workshop is
preferred for registration. Otherwise, provide a written statement
describing book repair skill level. Instructors are Christine
Wiseman, SOLINET Preservation Education Officer and Tina Mason,
SOLINET Preservation Field Service Officer.
The workshop will be held on Tuesday-Wednesday, September 14-15, 1999
from 8:30am - 5pm at the University of Kentucky, Lexington, KY.
Cost is $155 SOLINET members ($145 early bird, $180 late
registration); $215 Non-SOLINET & FEDLINK ($205 early bird, $240 late
registration). Any institution within Kentucky qualifies for the
member rate.
