ADDENDUM to the Southeastern Library Network Summer 1999 preservation
workshop schedule:
*******************FUNDAMENTALS OF BOOK REPAIR*********************
This two-day workshop is designed for staff members who actually
perform book repair in libraries and is useful also to those who
supervise repair units. The workshop will teach staff members how
to perform simple, economical, and preservation quality repairs on
materials in general, circulating and reference collections. The
following procedures will be taught in small groups modules through
demonstration and practices:
* Tightening hinges when text block are pulled away from the
cover
* Replacing torn endsheets
* Replacing torn or damaged spines
* Mending paper
* Tipping and hinging pages into bound volumes
The workshop will NOT cover techniques for the repair of materials
that are special, rare, or archival. Instructors are Christine
Wiseman, SOLINET Preservation Education Officer and Tina Mason,
SOLINET Preservation Field Service Officer.
The workshop will be held on Thursday-Friday, August 12-13, 1999 at
Columbia Theological Seminary, Decatur, GA. from 8:30am-5pm.
Cost is $155 SOLINET members ($145 early bird, $180 late
registration); $215 non-members ($205 early bird, $240 late
registration). Any institution within Georgia qualifies for the
member rate.
Included with the registration fee is an extensive book repair kit
containing a variety of tools and supplies.
******************INTERMEDIATE BOOK REPAIR**********************
This two-day hands-on workshop is deigned to hone repair skills
learned in Fundamentals of Book Repair. Participants are able to
participate more advanced techniques for general collections
repair, as well as construct enclosures for special collections.
Discussion addresses treatment decision making, properties of
adhesives, and managing a book repair operation.
Participants in SOLINET's Fundamentals of Book Repair workshop is
preferred for registration. Otherwise, provide a written statement
describing book repair skill level. Instructors are Christine
Wiseman, SOLINET Preservation Education Officer and Tina Mason,
SOLINET Preservation Field Service Officer.
The workshop will be held on Tuesday-Wednesday, September 14-15,
1999 from 8:30am - 5pm at the University of Kentucky, Lexington,
KY.
Cost is $155 SOLINET members ($145 early bird, $180 late
registration); $215 Non-SOLINET & FEDLINK ($205 early bird, $240
late registration). Any institution within Kentucky qualifies for
the member rate.
