Chris,
A small amount of mineral spirits, if applied carefully, should help with adhesives without doing too much damage especially if you clean it off quickly. I have found plexi buffing/cleaning solutions to be worthless. I am told that automobile buffing compounds are the thing to use
but I have not used them (anyone else?). For general polishing I really like C.R. Laurence's "Work Site" plastic cleaner (better than others I've tried - Brillianize, etc.).
